Global Health Institute (GHI)

About GHI

To advance global health under the One Team, One Health vision, the Institute for Global Health is now the Global Health Institute. We are housed within the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU) and serve as the focal point for global health information to all MSU colleges.

Mission Statement

We aim to become the focal point for the facilitation, integration, and dissemination of global health education, research, and outreach at Michigan State University for a far better world.

Our History

The Global Health Institute (originally the Institute of International Health, IIH) was established at Michigan State University in 1987 following years of planning and collaboration among faculty across multiple colleges. Its founding mission was to coordinate international health research, education, and outreach, serving as a hub for faculty and student engagement in global health issues. Early initiatives included multidisciplinary projects in countries such as Bulgaria, Egypt, Tanzania, and Japan, and the launch of the IIH Newsletter, which became a long-standing publication showcasing the Institute’s work. Leadership transitioned over time, with Dr. Roy Gerard and Dr. Herbert Whittier serving as early directors, followed by Dr. Evangelos Petropoulos and later Dr. Reza Nassiri, who helped expand the Institute’s global footprint.

In 2017, reflecting its broadened scope and deeper global engagement, the Institute was renamed the Institute for Global Health (IGH). This shift marked a strategic evolution toward capacity building, global partnerships, and transdisciplinary research. IGH launched study abroad programs, clerkship rotations in over 50 countries, and global health training initiatives. It also developed a Master of Science in Global Health and certificate programs, which began enrolling students in 2019 and 2020.

Today, the Global Health Institute (GHI) continues to lead international collaborations, including the Education and Research Consortium of the Americas and virtual institutes focused on pressing global health challenges such as infectious diseases and water quality. GHI remains a cornerstone of MSU’s commitment to global health education, research, and outreach.
