Peru

The Global Health Institute has established strong partnerships in Peru. Dr. Kenny Briceno, a Peruvian physician at the High Complexity Hospital (Hospitad de Alta Complejidad de La Libertad Virgen de la Puerta) in Trujillo, Peru, is an infectious disease specialist and a physician-researcher. He also serves as an associate professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and is the Global Health Institute Medical Director in Peru.

For more than a decade, each summer, over 30 College of Osteopathic Medicine students and 20 U.S. physicians travel to Iquitos, an island city in the middle of the Amazon River. Working closely with local healthcare staff, they provide essential primary care to underserved communities in the town and surrounding river villages. Dr. Briceno oversees research projects between MSU and the University of Cesar Vallejo (UCV), a national university in Peru. In summer 2026, a group of UCV faculty will visit MSU for a faculty development program at GHI.
