Mexico

In Mexico, a Michigan State University Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) clinic operates at O’Horan Hospital, a state-funded hospital in Merida, Yucatan. Dr. Travis Gordon, an assistant professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, serves as the clinic's physician and oversees medical education for all MSU students visiting Merida through the Global Health Institute. He provides OMM treatments to patients from local communities.

Several collaborative research projects are ongoing in Merida, including studies on mangrove restoration, mosquito control, and the impact of kidney stones. Each year, multiple Global Health Institute education abroad courses are held in Merida, where undergraduate and medical students learn about the Mexican health system, public health, and Mayan culture. In return, the Yucatan education ministry has sponsored college students to visit the Global Health Institute in recent years. The Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de la Península de Yucatán has hosted and provided clinical learning experiences for our students for many years, and recently established a dedicated Michigan State University research office within the hospital.
